If you’re thinking about buying a truck, then shouldn’t you go with the best selling truck in American history? That’s right; the Ford F-Series truck has been America’s top selling pickup truck for 40 consecutive years and the bestselling vehicle for the past 35. It’s pretty incredible really.
There are many reasons why Ford has been able to sell more than 26 million of trucks since their beginnings in 1977. In fact, Ford has sold enough F-series trucks to circle the world more than three times! Ford has consistently listened to their customers and have innovated their F-Series line to produce tougher and more capable trucks.
Ford F-Series Trucks
The Ford F-150 is a light duty truck, which means that the maximum loaded weight of the truck falls between 0-14,000 pounds. At Ford, we place a major focus on fuel economy, and in 2015 the curb weight of the F-150 model was reduced by nearly 750 pounds. This was achieved by switching the material of the body structure from steel to aluminum, and just keeping the frame itself made of high-strength steel. The standard features of the Ford F-150 include:
- 5L Ti-VCT V6 engine
- Peak horsepower of 282 @ 6250
- Peak torque 253 lb-ft. For the V6
- Towing capacities ranging from 5000 – 12,000 lbs (depending on the model)
- Starting price of $27,380
Of course, you can customize your Ford in many ways to better suit your specific needs and desires. You can upgrade to a 5.0L Ti-VCT V8 engine, which increased the peak horsepower to 385 @ 5750 and increased the peak torque to 387 lb-ft. You can also choose from various package add-ons, such as a Class IV trailer hitch, off-road and snow plow prep packages for 4×4 models, and various appearance packages too!
Looking for better fuel efficiency?
Ford took the initiative and designed the new Ford trucks to improve fuel efficiency by switching from steel to aluminum when it comes to the body structure. However, you can also decide to make your Ford pickup truck even more fuel efficiency and environmentally-friendly. For the F-150 series, you can opt for one of Ford’s EcoBoost engines (2.7L or 3.5L). These can achieve about 30% better fuel efficiency and 15% fewer greenhouse emissions.
Ford Super Duty Series
A light duty pickup truck is useful for hauling smelly hockey and football gear, mountain bikes, ATVs for off-roading and hunting, camping equipment and your weekly grocery run. But sometimes, the terrain is a little rougher or you need to tow something a lot heavier than what the F-150 can handle. This is where the Ford Super Duty series comes in.
Ford Super Duty trucks have a distinct chassis (the chassis is the automotive frame and its working parts), and better suspension components for heavier loads and towing capacity compared to the F-150. The Ford Super Duty series includes the F-250, F-350 and F-450 models. The current 2017 Ford Super Duty features:
- 7L Power Stroke® V8 Turbo Diesel engine
- Towing capacity ranging from 12,900 – 41,800 lbs (depending upon the model)
- Peak horsepower of 440 @ 2800 rpm
- Peak torque 925 lb-ft (which increased 65 lb-ft from the previous model)
- Starting price $32,535
Again, you can also customize your Super Duty model to best suit your requirements. If you prefer gas over diesel, you can choose for alternative fuel capability (6.2L 2-value V8 gas engine). You can take advantage of the towing capacities of these heavy duty trucks and add-on a snow plow prep package, camper package, off-road package or a 5th wheel/gooseneck trailer tow prep package. And for tough roads, there’s also a heavy service front suspension package.
The Future of Ford Trucks
As we move into the future and the marketplace changes, Ford won’t be left behind (which is obvious from the fact that the F-150 hasn’t failed in being America’s number one pickup for decades). Even though the current sales of electric vehicles are nowhere near that of traditional combustion engines, Ford will be ready if the market does make the switch (50% of millennials are interested in buying electric cars). Ford is currently working on a plug-in hybrid powertrain pickup truck (the F-150 series), and its debut is planned for 2020.
